To Sister Maria Zilda D Oliveira Filipe

This sheet of paper is far too small to say anything about Sister Zilda. A woman of God, with a big, charitable heart and a humane outlook that understood the complexity of life in Mozambique. God gave me the great opportunity of meeting her in 2002 and working together with the altar servers’ group at the Parish of St. John the Baptist in Fomento, Maputo. She was the spiritual director and I was the altar servers’ trainer. Through this companionship, brought about by the mighty hand of God through the then parish priest, Vicente Pallotti Zorzo, I gained a Mother, Friend and Counsellor.

Sister Maria Zilda de Oliveira Filipe was a woman of great human virtues, above all towards those most in need, and the light of God shone through her. It is thanks to her that many of us today are educated and hold knowledge and qualifications at various levels, because she always cared about helping, or about finding someone who could help. I don’t know what would have become of me if God had not placed her in my path. At the most difficult moment of my life, when I needed someone to give me a hand with my studies, Sister Zilda’s name came up in a conversation with Sister Maria de Lurdes Lima, whom we affectionately called Sister Marilu, another great Mother, friend and counsellor. She spoke the words I can still hear today: “Fernando, go and talk to Sister Zilda, she can help.” And so the path opened up, and not only for me. It was an open door for many, because through her we received help from Sister Alberta in Italy and from Ms Paula Brito, to whom we are very grateful.

As you can see, it is hard to say anything about Sister Zilda, because she did so much for me and for us. Words fail me, such is my gratitude to God for placing her in my path and in ours. Gratitude to her for the indelible mark she left on me, for the work she did in my life and in our lives. The Dorothean Sisters’ house was a home to me, where I found water to drink when I was thirsty, food when I was hungry, support when I was lost in my mind, and a safe place to study when I needed a library. All of this came from Sister Zilda’s immense generosity, her way of being, and her understanding of my weaknesses.

I don’t know if she ever realised how much GOOD she did for us!!! Or whether I will ever find the words to thank her for EVERYTHING. Wherever you are, dear Sister Maria Zilda D Oliveira Filipe, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Khanimambo / Thank you. May God grant you the rest you deserve.

A member of the community who received support from the Sisters

I started going to the Dorothean Sisters’ house when I became an altar server in 2012. That was when I began to interact with Sister Maria Zilda, who later became the altar servers’ godmother. The days we had formation sessions with Sister Zilda were moments of joy and deep spirituality. It was remarkable how she began each session by calling every one of us by name, without ever mixing anyone up, and asking how our families were, how school was going and what grades we were getting. The way she knew each of us was remarkable; we felt cherished with the love of a true mother.

For my part, I came to be more closely embraced by Sister Zilda and the Dorothean Sisters’ house when my brother introduced me to her. At the time I had just finished secondary school, and my family couldn’t afford the costs of higher education. It was mid-2013 and I wasn’t studying. Sister Zilda called me and said: “My son, you can’t stay at home doing nothing. Go and look for an English course to keep yourself busy while you prepare to get into university next year.” I did just that, received financial help, and completed Level 1 English at James Ingles School.

In 2014 I was admitted to the Pedagogical University. I told Sister Zilda, and she assured me of financial and moral support. I was given access to the Sisters’ house, the library and a computer so I could study and do my assignments. Even after she returned to Portugal, she kept following my progress: almost every week I received an email asking how I was. It brings tears to my eyes when I remember the moments I shared with her. There is no way to tell my life story without speaking of this great woman, great missionary and educator par excellence. Words fail me, so great is my gratitude to her. And this gratitude is not only for her but for the house as well, because even after she left, I continued, and still continue, to feel affection for the Dorothean Sisters. Sister Lurdes, Sister Lurdinha, Sister Augusta, Sister Palmira and Sister Alice treat me as a true son of the house. I could fill the page naming them all; these are just a few. And I’ll stop here.
